Santhome Basilica Cathedral, Chennai

About Santhome Basilica Cathedral

This Basilica Cathedral is one of the 3 churches built on the tomb of Jesus Christ’s apostles. The church with its Gothic style of architecture and the Bay of Bengal as its backdrop attracts people of all religions. The first thing you feel when you step into the church is the overwhelming peace; the ambience itself is worth visiting this place.

A small chapel was built on the tomb of St. Thomas in 72 A.D. Later, a church was built on the chapel by the Portuguese in 16th century. In 1740, the British rebuilt this as a minor basilica and then again in 1893 they rebuilt it with the status of cathedral. A spire of 183 feet was also built a year later (in 1894).
